Dorno in The Spider Man (10/7/1967)

Dorno is the son of Zandor, leader of the Herculoids, and his wife Tara, a family of three humans and their five very powerful pet creatures defending their jungle planet.  The Herculoids were the subjects of an American animated television series, which debuted in 1967 and was revived in 1981 on CBS and produced by Hanna-Barbera Productions.

Dorno has a cute, boyish face, long, blond hair, and a slender, athletic physique.  His shirtless Herculoids outfit consists of a pair of brown boots, a light, blue skirt and neck collar, and a gold belt and wrist bands.  At his age, he is growing taller and more attractive and gaining better muscle definition and athletic ability.  He is also developing more self-esteem and self-confidence and taking more risks.

Due to his youth and his lack of special powers, Dorno is certainly one of the most vulnerable members of the Herculoids and is frequently a weak link which their opponents seek to target.

In this episode, the Spider Men plan a surprise attack on the Herculoids.  Dorno is captured but manages to warn Tara of the danger.  The Herculoids repulse the Spider Men, who seek to retreat with their young hostage back to the endless caves.  Zandor is also captured in an unsuccessful attempt to rescue his son.  Fortunately, Tara and the Herculoids rescue the boys.

This is a favorite episode of mine due to both its plot and artistry.

Dorno is captured twice by the Spider Men.  His initial capture is unfortunately not depicted, but Dorno is subsequently shown helplessly struggling to free himself from a Spider Man, who has a hard exoskeleton and two extra arms with which to better restrain the boy or punish him for resisting.  With his second capture, Dorno is left beautifully on exhibit, as he is pinned to a cliff in a crucifix position.  His intended fate in the endless caves is provocatively ambiguous.  The title "Spider Man" suggests a wild feast upon the helpless boy's warm, young blood.  However, the villains' ant-like appearance brings to mind the alternate image of an unfortunate grasshopper whose limbs are ripped apart prior to being devoured.  Perhaps, it is better that we do not know.

The portrayal of the cute and slender Dorno is beauteous.  He has some wonderful scenes, struggling to free himself from a Spider Man with its six hard exoskeletal arms against his soft, smooth, youthful skin and pinned to a cliff in a crucifix position with his lean, athletic torso on display.
